Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs written question – answered on 24th October 2001.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make representations to President Mugabe to dissuade him from calling a state of emergency.
There is no indication at present that President Mugabe intends to call a state of emergency. We continue to urge the Government of Zimbabwe to take the necessary steps to restore political and economic stability, to respect human rights and the rule of law, and to create an environment conducive to free and fair elections.
