Mr. Ernie Ross asked the Prime Minister what is the value at current prices of the £23·50 as originally paid to youth opportunities programme trainees weekly; and if she will ensure that the rate of pay is increased.

The Prime Minister: The current YOP allowance was set at £23·50 in November 1979. Since that time the Retail Price Index has risen by 25·9 per cent. and the allowance would have to be increased to £29·50 in order to restore its real value to the November 1979 level. The Government believe the current allowance still provides young people with an incentive to join YOP, but my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Employment is reviewing its level following the request for an increase by the Manpower Services Commission.
