On 5 December 2005, I informed the House that I had issued for consultation a provisional local government finance settlement for 2006–07 giving indicative grant increases for that year and for 2007–08. The consultation period closed on 11 January. I intend to lay before the House shortly the Local Government Finance Report (England) 2006–07 which will establish the amounts of revenue support grant and non-domestic rates to be paid to local authorities in 2006–07 and the basis of their distribution.

Deputy Prime Minister

The office of Deputy Prime Minister is one that has only existed occasionally in the history of the United Kingdom. Unlike analogous offices in other nations, the Deputy Prime Minister does not have any of the powers of the Prime Minister in the latter's absence and there is no presumption that the Deputy Prime Minister will succeed the Prime Minister.

The post has existed intermittently and there have been a number of disputed occasions as to whether or not the title has actually been conferred.
