Under the terms of the Requirements for Teachers (Scotland) Regulations 2005 local authorities are required to employ teachers who are registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland and who have the appropriate professional skills and knowledge for the post in which they are employed. Assessment of whether teachers have the appropriate skills and knowledge through initial teacher education or continuing professional development is a matter for the local authority as employer.
