Hospital Parking Charges (Exemption for Carers) Bill (30 Oct 2015)

Julian Knight: I agree that we must value carers. However, the Bill is very narrow in its focus, whereas a much greater number of people could be covered by the guidelines and the NHS patient, visitor and staff car parking principles. There are opportunities to engage in our localities with our local hospitals and local hospital trusts in order to encourage them to expand existing provision. There is the...

Hospital Parking Charges (Exemption for Carers) Bill (30 Oct 2015)

Julian Knight: My hon. Friend makes a valuable point. In his speech he also touched on devolution. In my area we have the West Midlands combined authority coming to the fore. Although it does not currently have responsibility for NHS provision, that may come down the track towards us, as in the case of Manchester, which takes charge of its NHS in April 2016. The concern is that although these devolution...

Care Homes (Regulation) ( 4 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: My hon. Friend is making a powerful case and is clearly a strong advocate for fairness and transparency in the care home sector. On whether providers are being managed in the right way by the CQC, is not the point that they have said to Department for Business, Innovation and Skills that they feel that they are being asked to provide paperwork and not care, and that there is sometimes...

Opposition Day — [9th Allotted Day]: Policing ( 4 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: I am struck by the similarities between the actions of the police and crime commissioner in my hon. Friend’s constituency and those of the commissioner in my area of the west midlands. In her constituency area, the police have £65 million in reserves and yet are closing police services. In my area, we have £100 million of reserves. Will she reflect on that fact?

[Mr Charles Walker in the Chair] — backbench business — School Funding ( 5 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: I add my congratulations to the hon. Member for Beverley and Holderness (Graham Stuart) on securing the debate. I understand that in one respect the constituency of Stockport is probably very similar to Solihull, in that pupils come into our area from other areas that receive more money, and they are educated in our area but the money does not come with them. Does the hon. Lady want that...

Hedgehog Conservation (10 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: I congratulate my hon. Friend on securing this debate. Does he agree that the advent of specific hedgehog conservation areas, such as the one in Elmdon in my Solihull constituency, can play a major part in arresting the alarming decline in the numbers of the great British hedgehog?

Guaranteed Income for Retirees — [Mr Clive Betts in the Chair] (17 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: The hon. Member for Ross, Skye and Lochaber (Ian Blackford), whom I congratulate on securing this important debate, mentioned at one point reinstating the requirement to annuitise. The old open market system failed many vulnerable consumers, as my hon. Friend the Minister mentioned, and many with impaired life expectancy were shunted by providers into poorly paying and inappropriate annuity...

Personal Injury Fraud — [Phil Wilson in the Chair] (18 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: I thank the hon. Lady for giving way. She is making a sound case and an interesting argument. I also congratulate my hon. Friend the Member for Lincoln (Karl McCartney) on securing the debate. Perhaps the hon. Lady would be interested in the example of Sweden, which has found that the cost of whiplash injuries to insurers, and therefore the public, can be limited by...

Personal Injury Fraud — [Phil Wilson in the Chair] (18 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: Does the hon. Gentleman recognise that it is not just about an ABI agenda but about trying to reduce the cost of insurance to the public? The personal injury claim blight means that hard-working families must pay extra for their insurance.

[Mr Philip Hollobone in the Chair] — World Prematurity Day (24 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: I congratulate my hon. Friend on securing this important debate and on his unstinting work for the families of those who are facing the challenges of a premature birth. Often, one of the most acute problems facing families in that situation is meeting the costs of constant hospital visits. Will he join me in calling on all hospital trusts across the country to follow the Government’s...

[Mr Philip Hollobone in the Chair] — World Prematurity Day (24 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: My hon. Friend touched on the question of divorce following the sad death of an infant. I wonder whether she would like to reflect on the need for more marriage guidance and support structures for those who face that awful situation, and more widely on how working towards a seven-day NHS will help to alleviate many of the problems that come about with premature birth.

Opposition Day — [11th Allotted Day]: Trident (24 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: Does my hon. Friend recognise that Ukraine was persuaded to give up its nuclear weapons, and as a result Putin has been able to ride roughshod over international agreements?

Mr Shaker Aamer — [Mrs Madeleine Moon in the Chair] (25 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: I congratulate my hon. Friend on securing this important debate. On a day when the Chancellor has announced difficult decisions in the spending review, many of my constituents will be horrified at the thought of compensation being paid to Mr Aamer. Will my hon. Friend reflect on that for a moment?

Mr Shaker Aamer — [Mrs Madeleine Moon in the Chair] (25 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: On that point, I wonder whether the figure of £30 million to £50 million that he just cited is in relation to our fighting the case and losing it. If so, what would be the figure if we fought the case and won?

Sugary Drinks Tax — [Mr Fabian Hamilton in the Chair] (30 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: Will the hon. Gentleman give way?

Sugary Drinks Tax — [Mr Fabian Hamilton in the Chair] (30 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: I thank the hon. Gentleman for giving way. Will he recognise that all the companies he just mentioned are major employers in this country and that it is perfectly right for Ministers, the Prime Minister and other Members of Parliament to meet with those companies so that they can put forward their views?

Sugary Drinks Tax — [Mr Fabian Hamilton in the Chair] (30 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: My hon. Friend is making an excellent speech. I do not wish to be accused of being in the pay of “Big Sugar”, which sounds vaguely like a ’70s wrestler, but does she agree that public awareness and better labelling of products are more important than anything to do with a sugar tax? Through them we can help to reduce sugar intake and change attitudes.

Sugary Drinks Tax — [Mr Fabian Hamilton in the Chair] (30 Nov 2015)

Julian Knight: My hon. Friend mentions cycling, and I concur; it is fantastic exercise, and its health benefits mean that regular cyclists live many years longer. Does she agree that one area we can improve is competitive sport in schools? Having more of that would bring about better health outcomes and better health among our young people.

Petitions: School Funding Model ( 1 Dec 2015)

Julian Knight: I rise to present this petition on behalf of many hundreds of residents in Solihull in the same terms as my hon. Friend the Member for Beverley and Holderness. The Petition of the residents of Solihull. [P001604]

Riot Compensation Bill ( 4 Dec 2015)

Julian Knight: This issue is not just about the riots of 2011; many other localised riots have led to very extensive and expensive bills for local police forces. For instance, the total bill for the rioting in Bradford in 2001 amounted to £450 million, even though it was a localised riot.

By default, we show words related to your search term, like “cycle” and “cycles” in a search for cycling. Putting the word in quotes, like "cycling", will stop this.

Excluding these words

You can also do this from the main search box by putting a minus sign before words you don’t want: like hunting -fox

We also support a bunch of boolean search modifiers, like AND and NEAR, for precise searching.
