City Regions and Metro Mayors ( 9 Jun 2015)

Alison Thewliss: I have listened to this debate with great interest more as an observer than as someone who seeks to impose their views. As a Scottish National party Member, and as a former local councillor, I think it is important that local areas take decisions for themselves because they understand what best suits their needs. The debate on city deals for England is interesting because we have a city deal...

Opposition Day — [2nd Allotted Day]: Skills and Growth (17 Jun 2015)

Alison Thewliss: Thank you, Mr Deputy Speaker, for calling me to speak in this important debate on skills and growth. I begin by paying tribute to those who have made their maiden speeches this afternoon, some of whom have left now. I associate myself with the comments of the hon. Member for Birmingham, Perry Barr (Mr Mahmood) about ESOL and English as a second language, which is a huge issue in my...

Oral Answers to Questions — Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: Air Quality (Glasgow) (18 Jun 2015)

Alison Thewliss: What discussions her Department has had with Glasgow City Council on projections for Glasgow’s air quality and compliance with EU air quality regulations.

Oral Answers to Questions — Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: Air Quality (Glasgow) (18 Jun 2015)

Alison Thewliss: I thank the Minister for that response. Given the recent European Commission ruling relating to Client Earth, does the Minister consider it wise, with ongoing issues on Hope Street in Glasgow, that Glasgow City Council expedites its action on this issue in its air quality action plan?

European Union Referendum Bill: Clause 2 — Entitlement to Vote in the Referendum (18 Jun 2015)

Alison Thewliss: Does it not strike the hon. Lady that whenever franchises have been extended in this country, whether it be from 21 to 18, or indeed allowing women the franchise, arguments about capacity and the ability to vote have always been made, yet the franchise age has gone down? More people have participated in elections, and that has been a good thing for democracy.

National Breastfeeding Week (24 Jun 2015)

Alison Thewliss: I beg to move, That this House has considered National Breastfeeding Week. It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Mr Bone, and to be lucky enough to have secured this debate during National Breastfeeding Week. I welcome Members in the Chamber and those who are breastfeeding as they watch our proceedings online. Members well versed in social media might have noted that some great...

National Breastfeeding Week (24 Jun 2015)

Alison Thewliss: As I was saying before the Division, celebrating breastfeeding is the theme of this National Breastfeeding Week, and there is much to celebrate about that remarkable human act. Although completely natural, breastfeeding is also a skill that mothers and babies must learn together, and is not without its difficulties. I acknowledge that some women cannot breastfeed and others choose not to, and...

National Breastfeeding Week (24 Jun 2015)

Alison Thewliss: I thank the Minister and all the Members who have spoken today; the fact that they came along and participated is very much appreciated. I can see from Twitter that the debate has been getting a good and interesting response. I thank the hon. Member for Dulwich and West Norwood (Helen Hayes) for her contribution and for her support for the organisations in her area that clearly need it at...

National Breastfeeding Week (24 Jun 2015)

Alison Thewliss: Thank you, Mr Bone. I have found it difficult because the time is not what I expected it to be, so I was unsure about whether I was running out of time and how long I had. I thank the Minister for his contribution. I still think that there are lots of issues that we, as individual Members, ought to take up in this Parliament to support mothers in any way we can. I thank hon. Members again for...

[Andrew Rosindell in the Chair] — Older Industrial Areas: Economic Disparities (25 Jun 2015)

Alison Thewliss: I thank the hon. Member for Easington (Grahame M. Morris) for securing this important debate. I represent a constituency that includes several older industrial areas and bounds other areas in Glasgow and South Lanarkshire with a huge industrial legacy. The legacy comes with real, long-standing issues of contaminated, vacant and derelict land that prevent economic initiatives from happening...

School Transport — [Mr Charles Walker in the Chair] (25 Jun 2015)

Alison Thewliss: It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Mr Walker. I have a great interest in this motion and I thank the hon. Member for Ribble Valley (Mr Evans) for securing this debate. In Glasgow this afternoon, there are people outside Glasgow City Chambers protesting at the cuts to bus services within the Glasgow city area. Glasgow City Council has decided to raise the qualifying distance...

Ways and Means: Budget Resolutions and Economic Situation — amendment of the law ( 8 Jul 2015)

Alison Thewliss: Does the right hon. Lady really think that women will applaud paragraph 2.103, at the top of page 88 of the Red Book, which reads: “The Department for Work and Pensions and HMRC will develop protections for women who have a third child as the result of rape, or other exceptional circumstances” when calculating their eligibility for child benefit? That is appalling.

Ways and Means: Budget Resolutions and Economic Situation — amendment of the law ( 8 Jul 2015)

Alison Thewliss: Does the hon. Gentleman accept that the apprenticeship rate is currently set at £2.73, as part of the minimum wage regulations? How does he expect young people to live on that while serving their apprenticeship?

Ways and Means: Budget Resolutions and Economic Situation — amendment of the law ( 8 Jul 2015)

Alison Thewliss: I shall help the hon. Gentleman out a little. Does he accept that the cuts to tax credits are going to have a disproportionate effect on women? The Fawcett Society says that the freeze in working-age benefits will disproportionately affect women, with one fifth of women’s incomes coming in benefits compared with one tenth of men’s.

Ways and Means: Budget Resolutions and Economic Situation — amendment of the law ( 8 Jul 2015)

Alison Thewliss: Given the budget constraints the hon. Gentleman is talking about, does he consider Trident renewal to be a good priority in the defence budget?

Bills Presented: Ways and Means — Budget Resolutions and Economic Situation — Amendment of the Law ( 9 Jul 2015)

Alison Thewliss: Does my hon. Friend agree that these circumstances could stigmatise the child and run contrary to our obligations under the UN convention on the rights of the child?

[Mr Graham Brady in the Chair] — Elected Mayors and Local Government ( 9 Jul 2015)

Alison Thewliss: In my experience on the Strathclyde fire board, when members—regardless of whether they were from Labour or the SNP—attempted to raise local issues, it was thrown back at us that the fire board was not the appropriate place to raise local issues. Does my hon. Friend share that experience?

Isil: Ways and Means — Budget Resolutions and Economic Situation — Amendment of the Law (13 Jul 2015)

Alison Thewliss: It is a dubious honour to be called to speak in this Budget debate—not because I am not keen to speak on behalf of my party and my constituents, but because so many things about it still upset me deeply. I raised the issue last week, but I have yet to receive an answer on the provision set out at the top of page 88 of the Red Book. Specifically, what kind of system will the Department for...

Isil: Ways and Means — Budget Resolutions and Economic Situation — Amendment of the Law (13 Jul 2015)

Alison Thewliss: When the powers this Government have force people into poverty and do not help to support them at their time of need, I say that that is a crisis and that we are hamstrung in our ability to help people. This Government expect the Scottish Government to mitigate the worst of their policies, but we should not exist to do so. Give us the powers, and we will do what we can. Cuts have now come to...
