Oral Answers to Questions — Defence: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate (29 Feb 2016)

Stewart McDonald: Where he expects the Type 31 general purpose frigate to be built.

Oral Answers to Questions — Defence: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate (29 Feb 2016)

Stewart McDonald: Given the expectations raised by the Government following the strategic defence and security review, that answer is most unwelcome. Does the Minister not agree with me—I may be biased as a Glasgow MP—that, given that the finest ships anywhere in the world were built on the Clyde, it would be the perfect location for this building to take place?

Govia Thameslink and Network Rail — [Mr Philip Hollobone in the Chair] (16 Mar 2016)

Stewart McDonald: It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Mr Hollobone. Right hon. and hon. Members will be correct in thinking that nobody has contacted me about this issue. [Laughter.] Actually, that is not true. The only people who have contacted me about it are in this room, and they did so because I am a member of the Transport Committee. When I was asked to sum up for the Scottish National...

Oral Answers to Questions — Scotland: Government’s Welfare Programme (23 Mar 2016)

Stewart McDonald: Will the Secretary of State tell the House and the people of Scotland when he realised that those cuts were wrong, or was he planning a resignation over the weekend?

Government Referendum Leaflet (11 Apr 2016)

Stewart McDonald: The Minister is quite possibly the first and only Conservative that I have ever felt sorry for. Yet again, he has been sent out by the Government to be the sacrificial lamb for the howling Brexiteers on the Benches behind him. As someone who supports remaining in the EU, I am concerned the Government are alienating voters rather than informing them. Is the Minister planning any follow-up...

Tax Avoidance and Evasion (13 Apr 2016)

Stewart McDonald: rose—

Tax Avoidance and Evasion (13 Apr 2016)

Stewart McDonald: Well, it is some scandal, is it not, that has been leaked to us? Criminals, politicians and dictators have been hiding billions and billions of pounds in offshore accounts under the names of companies that do not actually exist. In fact, it is the scale and nature of the scandal that causes me to be so depressed about the nature of the debate we have had both in the Chamber this afternoon and...

Business of the House (14 Apr 2016)

Stewart McDonald: Scottish Tories.

Business of the House (14 Apr 2016)

Stewart McDonald: When the House rose for the recess, a local shopkeeper in my constituency, Asad Shah, was tragically killed. He was a much loved, gentle and friendly man, and he will be sorely missed by many in the Southside of Glasgow. He was also a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, and the police have identified that there was religious aggravation behind the killing. May we have a debate on the...

Shipbuilding on the Clyde (25 Apr 2016)

Stewart McDonald: As ever at this time of year, there is much reminiscing over the UK’s defeat of Argentina. Given that that took a taskforce of 42 Royal Navy ships, does the Minister really expect us to believe that a fleet of 19 frigates and destroyers is sufficient for a Navy with the strategic ambitions outlined in the 2015 SDSR?

European Convention on Human Rights: Uk Membership (26 Apr 2016)

Stewart McDonald: Had it not been for the Strasbourg Court, gay men and women in this country would not be serving in our armed forces, but because of the 1999 judgment there has been a rainbow revolution in our armed forces. Is that not just one of the many reasons why we should stick with the ECHR?

Oral Answers to Questions — Transport: Drones (Safety Risks) (28 Apr 2016)

Stewart McDonald: I hear what the Transport Secretary is saying about his engagement with airports, but this is also an issue for stadiums, railway stations and other places where the public gather in huge numbers. What discussions has he had with the widest possible range of stakeholders, including local authorities, on the use of drones?

Oral Answers to Questions — Transport: Drones (Safety Risks) (28 Apr 2016)

Stewart McDonald: I am grateful for that—even if it was not much of an answer, to be entirely honest. The Secretary of State also briefly touched on another very important issue relating to the threat that laser pens pose to airports across the United Kingdom. BALPA has called for all but the lowest-strength laser pens to be banned. What is his response to that?

Business of the House (28 Apr 2016)

Stewart McDonald: The Jewish community has a history with Scotland going back beyond 200 years. I know that Members of this House will want to send a message that we value the Jewish community and the contribution it has made not just in Scotland but across the United Kingdom. With that in mind, and given this week’s events, may we have a debate on the valuable contribution that the Jewish community has made...

Debate on the Address: [1st Day] (18 May 2016)

Stewart McDonald: Is not the reality that this Queen’s Speech was not for viewers in Scotland—so much so that the Scotland Secretary has been nowhere to be seen on the Front Bench? I think that even my predecessor, Sir Teddy Taylor, had more to say about Scotland. Perhaps my right hon. Friend could encourage the Prime Minister to tell us what new plans he has to embolden our national Parliament in Edinburgh.

Debate on the Address: [1st Day] (18 May 2016)

Stewart McDonald: He still has.

Oral Answers to Questions — Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Middle East: Press Freedom (24 May 2016)

Stewart McDonald: What recent representations he has made to his counterparts in the middle east on press freedom in that region.

Oral Answers to Questions — Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Middle East: Press Freedom (24 May 2016)

Stewart McDonald: It is now four years since the Saudi writer Raif Badawi was arrested. Earlier this month his wife was sentenced to 1,000 lashes for promoting her husband’s cause around the world. Given that it was British engineers who have extracted Saudi oil and built their roads, and given our massive co-operation on matters of defence and foreign policy, are not people around the world and in this...

Business of the House (26 May 2016)

Stewart McDonald: In my constituency, the only international aid agency in Glasgow—Glasgow the Caring City—will close its doors this week because of a decision by a shambolic arm’s length external organisation controlled by the Labour party to hike its rent by 400,000%. May we have a debate on the unaccountability of ALEOs across the UK and on how they treat charities across the UK?

NHS Commissioning (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) ( 7 Jun 2016)

Stewart McDonald: I do not doubt the Minister’s commitment to this issue, but she has to understand how it looks to the outside world. This is a Government who brought forward legislation to ban poppers, for goodness’ sake, but it looks as though they have got their head in the sand over PrEP. Israel, Kenya, Canada, France and the United States all get it. Why are we so far behind?

Advanced search

Find this exact word or phrase

You can also do this from the main search box by putting exact words in quotes: like "cycling" or "hutton report"

By default, we show words related to your search term, like “cycle” and “cycles” in a search for cycling. Putting the word in quotes, like "cycling", will stop this.

Excluding these words

You can also do this from the main search box by putting a minus sign before words you don’t want: like hunting -fox

We also support a bunch of boolean search modifiers, like AND and NEAR, for precise searching.
