Oral Answers to Questions — Education: Apprenticeships ( 6 Jan 2014)

Rushanara Ali: Does the Minister believe that schools are providing adequate careers guidance about the availability of apprenticeships in the light of Sir Michael Wilshaw’s comments: “It is worrying that the new arrangements are failing to provide good guidance or to promote vocational training options and apprenticeships”?

[Andrew Rosindell in the Chair] — School Governing Bodies ( 5 Dec 2013)

Rushanara Ali: It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Mr Rosindell, on an entirely different brief from my previous one. I congratulate the Chair of the Select Committee, the hon. Member for Beverley and Holderness (Mr Stuart), and the hon. Members who serve on that Committee for this welcome contribution to a very important subject. As the Chair of the Committee and other hon. Members,...

[Andrew Rosindell in the Chair] — School Governing Bodies ( 5 Dec 2013)

Rushanara Ali: Okay; we are talking about non-regulatory training. The point is that appropriate training is vital. According to TheTimes Educational Supplement, 93% of the respondents to the joint survey said that this would be helpful; they supported training. That reinforces the Select Committee’s recommendation. The Government should examine the issue closely, genuinely to ensure that governors have...

[Andrew Rosindell in the Chair] — School Governing Bodies ( 5 Dec 2013)

Rushanara Ali: The exemplars clearly do that. All of us will have seen schools taking on this role actively and ensuring that proper training is provided. I certainly benefited from training as a governor of a further education college. The charitable organisations that provide training to governors, not just of schools and colleges but of charities, charitable organisations and social enterprises, are...

[Andrew Rosindell in the Chair] — School Governing Bodies ( 5 Dec 2013)

Rushanara Ali: I do, and I will come on to that point shortly, but before I deal with clerks, I want to focus on federations and multi-academy trusts. In their ideological drive to force schools into academy status regardless of the views of parents, governors and school communities, the Government have been ignoring the benefits of federations of schools as drivers of school improvement and as an...

Oral Answers to Questions — Business, Innovation and Skills: Topical Questions ( 5 Dec 2013)

Rushanara Ali: In the light of the revelation that the Government have failed to act to close a tax loophole that has cost the public some £500 million a year, what discussions has the Secretary of State had with Treasury Ministers about the concern that some large firms are failing to pay the correct amount of tax while smaller ones are making their contribution?

Oral Answers to Questions — Education: Information: Young People (11 Nov 2013)

Rushanara Ali: The Government’s programme for school-based careers guidance has been slated by the OECD, Ofsted and the Chair of the Education Committee. Careers England found that the Government’s changes have caused a drastic reduction in careers services for some 80% of schools. What is the Minister going to do about that?

Oral Answers to Questions — Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Topical Questions (29 Oct 2013)

Rushanara Ali: Barclays bank made the decision to end banking facilities for money transfer companies such as Dahabshiil and that decision will devastate countries such as Somalia. Will the Foreign Secretary take this opportunity to speak up and explain what he will do to try to prevent the closure of this legitimate route of money transfer to a country that depends on it for its security and to achieve...

Backbench Business — Private Members’ Bills: Cycling ( 2 Sep 2013)

Rushanara Ali: Will the hon. Gentleman give way?

Backbench Business — Private Members’ Bills: Cycling ( 2 Sep 2013)

Rushanara Ali: I thank the hon. Gentleman for securing this debate. I want to draw the House’s attention to the death in my constituency in July of Philippine De Gerin-Ricard, a 20-year-old student who was tragically killed while cycling. In the previous year, two others were killed on the ring road. I fully support the hon. Gentleman’s point about the need for investment to make roads safer, for...

Money Transfer Accounts — [Hugh Bayley in the Chair] (17 Jul 2013)

Rushanara Ali: I was encouraged to hear the Minister’s reference to his personal experience—his family experience —but I am disappointed at the lack of focus in his response on the fact that we need an urgent solution. I appreciated his time before the debate thinking through a constructive way forward. I hope that he will use the last 10 minutes to talk about how he will get his officials, the FCA...

Money Transfer Accounts — [Hugh Bayley in the Chair] (17 Jul 2013)

Rushanara Ali: I thank the Minister for being generous. Can he explain what evidence DFID used to come to that conclusion? I have not been given any evidence, nor have my hon. Friends or other hon. Members. DFID should be looking at how to improve this important industry, because we want to end aid dependency. It is scandalous that DFID is being so complacent and commissioning a research project, when...

Money Transfer Accounts — [Hugh Bayley in the Chair] (17 Jul 2013)

Rushanara Ali: It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Mr Bayley. I am delighted to have secured this debate on the provision of money transfer account services by banks and their impact on Britain’s ethnic minority communities in particular. Remittance plays a vital and complementary role in helping to lift millions of people out of poverty across the world, and it plays a vital role in...

Money Transfer Accounts — [Hugh Bayley in the Chair] (17 Jul 2013)

Rushanara Ali: I thank the hon. Lady for her intervention. She has added an important perspective to the debate, which is that the issue also affects countries that people might not have thought about. I commend parliamentarians, because some 46 Labour MPs have already signed a letter, and I know that the all-party group on Somaliland and Somalia has also made representations to the Government. MPs and...

Money Transfer Accounts — [Hugh Bayley in the Chair] (17 Jul 2013)

Rushanara Ali: My hon. Friend is absolutely right. The amounts of money are often small. People work hard to make a living and provide a bit of support. I know that because many of my constituents tell me stories about how they are supporting the education of distant relatives or immediate family members by sending them money every month. During Ramadan, which we are in right now, people have a duty to give...

Money Transfer Accounts — [Hugh Bayley in the Chair] (17 Jul 2013)

Rushanara Ali: Absolutely. I would be interested to hear whether the Minister has had any representations from such companies. I understand that some lobbying has been done, certainly in America. It would be useful to know whether he has had representations from bigger agencies, including MoneyGram and Western Union. One concern is that the underlying agenda is to shut down small operators because they do...

Energy and Climate Change: EU Carbon Emissions (11 Jul 2013)

Rushanara Ali: What recent discussions he has had with his EU counterparts on reducing European carbon emissions.

Energy and Climate Change: EU Carbon Emissions (11 Jul 2013)

Rushanara Ali: I thank the Secretary of State for his answer. Last week, however, the European Parliament voted to hold back carbon credits from the EU emissions trading scheme. Does the Secretary of State agree that the 20 Conservative MEPs who voted against the proposals were voting not only against action to tackle carbon emissions and prevent climate change, but against the interests of British business?

Energy and Climate Change: Topical Questions (11 Jul 2013)

Rushanara Ali: Last year the Chancellor boasted he was the first to fund a green investment bank, but that is not actually the case, because the Government are now borrowing £158 billion more than planned, and we will not have a proper green investment bank until 2016 at the earliest. How can the green investment bank be part of a growth strategy, and will the Minister provide an update on this?
