Public Bill Committee: Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill: Examination of Witnesses (31 Oct 2017)

Graham Jones: Obviously, you represent the motor manufacturers, and I am concerned about the shape and size of vehicles going forward and the adequacy of the legislation. My hon. Friend the Member for Kingston upon Hull here has, I think, a TwingoQ —do you have a Twingo?

Public Bill Committee: Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill: Examination of Witnesses (31 Oct 2017)

Graham Jones: Twizy—that is it. I notice even on the continent, particularly in urban areas, we are getting smaller and smaller electric vehicles and cars driving around. Is the legislation adequate for the type and size of electric vehicle that might come on to the market? What changes do you see, for example? How will an automated vehicle work when you add a trailer to it or make some other changes to...

Public Bill Committee: Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill: Examination of Witnesses (31 Oct 2017)

Graham Jones: Q It is not just that. What if I set off with a trailer in manual mode but I suddenly decide to be sneaky and switch it over to automated and go to sleep? There are a whole bunch of issues around the change in form, shape and size of vehicle and going between manual and automated.

Gaming Machines and Social Responsibility (31 Oct 2017)

Graham Jones: My constituency has 54 FOBTs. Some £2.5 million was lost on these machines last year and £15 million has been lost since 2008 in a deprived constituency. The recent report by the Institute for Public Policy Research and GambleAware said that it is costing the UK £1.2 billion to look after the victims of gambling—people who are addicted and have various problems. What assessment has the...

Public Bill Committee: Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill: Examination of Witness (31 Oct 2017)

Graham Jones: Q Robert, you are a great enthusiast for automated and electric vehicles, so the Bill must please you no end. I have just a broad question and then a specific question. Broadly, what is missing from the Bill? We heard from Unite about integrated transport, rather than this just being about the relationship between the driver and the vehicle via the insurance company, as well as some other...

Public Bill Committee: Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill: Examination of Witness (31 Oct 2017)

Graham Jones: Q Boris bikes for villages.

Public Bill Committee: Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill: Examination of Witnesses (31 Oct 2017)

Graham Jones: Q What impact will the Bill have on employment if it goes through?

Public Bill Committee: Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill: Examination of Witnesses (31 Oct 2017)

Graham Jones: I am interested in the collection, retention and distribution of data and also the issue that has just been raised by my colleagues about the software prescription; whether it will be prescribed that software must be updated and all the problems that might ensue from thatQ . Let me lay out an example and ask your view of the Bill. If somebody switches to manual from automated and is involved...

Public Bill Committee: Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill: Examination of Witnesses (31 Oct 2017)

Graham Jones: Q I am interested in your final comment that there needs to be discussion about what data are kept—perhaps the Bill does not go into that in detail. Road safety is important, and some of the data could be used to improve it. I have concerns, therefore, and I ask the question again that you partially answered: does the Bill provide a robust framework for improved road safety through data...

Graham Jones: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what estimate he has made of the number of Brimstone missiles used by Saudi Arabia in the conflict on Yemen.

Oral Answers to Questions — Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: Ivory Trade (26 Oct 2017)

Graham Jones: I met some Angolan MPs last week who were unaware of a recent report stating that Angola’s elephant population has fallen from 200,000 to 3,400. Is not it the case that the world simply is not doing enough to protect the African elephant, as well as other animals and environmental species? We have to do more to save the planet, and the African elephant is a start.

Raqqa and Daesh (24 Oct 2017)

Graham Jones: There is a significant presence of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and Daesh in Yemen. What assessment have the Government made of the extremist threat in Yemen, and what support are we giving to the ground troops of Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates and the Government forces that are trying to defeat those extremists in that country?

Schools: National Funding Formula: General Election Campaign: Abuse and Intimidation (14 Sep 2017)

Graham Jones: I want to make a few points. We have to be defenders of free speech, and debates that do not end with a conclusion from both sides or are curtailed for whatever reason cannot be described as free speech. Debates are often curtailed because of abuse, and I believe that free speech is diminishing in this country because of the amount of abuse that is handed out—on social media, by and large....

Schools: National Funding Formula: General Election Campaign: Abuse and Intimidation (14 Sep 2017)

Graham Jones: I think we are sometimes hesitant to call out abuse. Sometimes the volume can be so great that we walk away. I hope that the Government review will look into the cumulative impact of low-volume abuse, how we manage free speech, and how people, as my hon. Friend suggests, sometimes recoil from engaging. As he says, when Members who feel abused come together and make a strong point, it offers a...

Schools: National Funding Formula: General Election Campaign: Abuse and Intimidation (14 Sep 2017)

Graham Jones: I am enjoying the hon. Gentleman’s arguments. Does he share my view that free speech arises where a debate is able to reach a conclusion without being interrupted or stopped by abuse, and where such a democratic debate is based on discourse and an exchange of views?

Schools: National Funding Formula: General Election Campaign: Abuse and Intimidation (14 Sep 2017)

Graham Jones: I am listening intently to the points the right hon. Gentleman is making, and he refers to the point I made earlier, but does he not accept that we are in danger of losing a degree of freedom of speech because of bullying online? It is simply not possible to engage in a broad-minded and open debate when a volume of people insist on handing out personal abuse.

Schools: National Funding Formula: General Election Campaign: Abuse and Intimidation (14 Sep 2017)

Graham Jones: I am simply not going to disagree with the point the right hon. Gentleman has just made.
