Tom Brake: If he will co-operate with any independent inquiry into the death of Harry Dunn.

Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Harry Dunn ( 5 Nov 2019)

Tom Brake: I start by congratulating you, Mr Speaker, on your election. I know that you will want to defend the rights of this House against any rogue Executive. I extend my deepest sympathies to Harry Dunn’s family. Are the Government exploring routes to extradite the driver? Do they think they are likely to be successful, given that President Trump’s notes, which were caught on camera, appear to...

Tributes to the Speaker (31 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: I will start from a slightly different place from other Members, and thank you, Mr Speaker, for the support you have given me on the House of Commons Commission. We have not necessarily seen eye to eye on every matter raised, but I am sure we both wish to thank the staff who supported you, and the civil servants who supported me. I have no idea whether I will be back seeking their support...

House of Commons Commission: Speaker’s Advisory Committee on Works of Art: Frequency of Reports (31 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: The Speaker’s Advisory Committee on Works of Art publishes an annual report, which is considered by the House’s Finance Committee. The Commission does not receive routine updates. The annual report for 2018-19 was published on the Committee’s website yesterday.

House of Commons Commission: Speaker’s Advisory Committee on Works of Art: Frequency of Reports (31 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: I thank the hon. Gentleman for his question, although I am disappointed he did not manage to work electronic voting into it. He will be pleased to know that the Committee is conscious that Winnie Ewing is currently a notable absence from the parliamentary art collection. It is investigating the possibility of a temporary loan of a portrait for display in Parliament, and it will continue to...

House of Commons Commission: Speaker’s Advisory Committee on Works of Art: Frequency of Reports (31 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: I believe that was probably a bid for a portrait of you to be provided in the House, Mr Speaker, so we look forward to that.

House of Commons Commission: Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (31 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: Good progress is being made on implementing the independent complaints and grievance scheme, and on the recommendations by Dame Laura Cox and Gemma White, QC, to improve the working culture of the House. Complainants with non-recent cases, and former members of the parliamentary community who were not previously covered by the scheme, were able to access it from Monday 21 October this year....

House of Commons Commission: Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (31 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: I agree that there should be a completely independent process, and I regret that 12 months on that has not been resolved. A group is making good progress on that, and it expects to report back to the Commission later this year. I hope that by the end of this year that issue will be resolved.

House of Commons Commission: Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (31 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: I thank the hon. Gentleman for that question. If he is referring to particular cases, he can pass the details on to me. I am aware that support has been made available to Members of Parliament against whom legal cases have been pursued. I will follow that up if he is able to pass me the details.

House of Commons Commission: Digitising Parliamentary Processes (31 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: As I hope that Members are aware, the House of Commons and the Parliamentary Digital Service have made significant progress in digitising various parliamentary processes, such as through the Members’ hub for tabling questions digitally. Members might not be aware that “Erskine May” was made publicly available online for the very first time in July this year and is available through the...

House of Commons Commission: Digitising Parliamentary Processes (31 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: I can reassure the hon. Lady and other Members that if they have issues about the way the Members’ hub works, for instance, they can simply walk the short distance from here to the Table Office. I understand that the Table Office, on a monthly basis, reviews suggestions and possible improvements that Members have drawn to their attention. I know personally, from having raised an issue, that...

House of Commons Commission: Digitising Parliamentary Processes (31 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: I can reassure the hon. Gentleman that that has happened and that there are further changes in the pipeline, for instance in relation to Committees, legislation and Members’ web pages. The changes he seeks to introduce to make this place a paperless environment are in the pipeline and, I hope, will be delivered over the next few years.

Health and Social Care: Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust (29 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: How much capital funding he plans to allocate to Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust in each of the next three years.

Health and Social Care: Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust (29 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: I thank the Minister for that. I obviously welcome the announcement—I, local residents, councillors and indeed the hon. Member for Mitcham and Morden (Siobhain McDonagh) have been campaigning on this for many years—but does he remember that in 2015 there was £219 million available for St Helier Hospital, which was then deleted from the Budget by the incoming Conservative Government? Can...

Business of the House (24 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: The Leader of the House wants a general election on 12 December. Can he explain to the House what the purpose of the Queen’s Speech was?

Transport: Topical Questions (24 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: In relation to Operation Yellowhammer, may I ask the Secretary of State what role the 300 troops and 180 police officers who are to be put on standby will play in policing the transport network in and around the port of Portsmouth, and how many other troops and police may be deployed at other ports?

Cabinet Office: Leaving the EU: UK Readiness (23 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: Will the Minister confirm that, for the no-deal preparations in relation to the port of Portsmouth, three companies of soldiers and 180 police are on standby? If that is correct, how many more troops and police have been put on standby for remaining ports around the country?

European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill (22 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: First, it is worth noting that this House had more time to debate the Wild Animals in Circuses Act 2019, which affected 19 animals, than we will have on this particular Bill. The Institute for Government has said that the timetable appears to have been deliberately “designed to frustrate… scrutiny”. Clearly, it was, and I think the grin that kept on spreading across the face of the...

Business of the House (21 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: Does my hon. Friend agree that if we had more time to debate these issues, it might be possible to clarify the cost to business of the forms that he has just mentioned, so that we get a better understanding? It could be a phenomenally large figure. We know that Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs has costed some of the changes under a no-deal exit at £15 billion, in relation to the customs...

Preparations for Leaving the European Union (21 Oct 2019)

Tom Brake: Will the Minister confirm that, in a no-deal scenario, no patient will have their treatment delayed or cancelled if they are dependent on radioisotopes?

Advanced search

Find this exact word or phrase

You can also do this from the main search box by putting exact words in quotes: like "cycling" or "hutton report"

By default, we show words related to your search term, like “cycle” and “cycles” in a search for cycling. Putting the word in quotes, like "cycling", will stop this.

Excluding these words

You can also do this from the main search box by putting a minus sign before words you don’t want: like hunting -fox

We also support a bunch of boolean search modifiers, like AND and NEAR, for precise searching.

Date range

to

You can give a start date, an end date, or both to restrict results to a particular date range. A missing end date implies the current date, and a missing start date implies the oldest date we have in the system. Dates can be entered in any format you wish, e.g. 3rd March 2007 or 17/10/1989

Enter a name here to restrict results to contributions only by that person.
