Baroness Royall of Blaisdon: My Lords, the Minister rightly celebrates the independence of the judiciary. However, my noble and learned friend Lord Falconer asked him to condemn the words of Sajid Javid, who by his words undermined what the Minister is saying. What the right honourable Minister said was completely unacceptable; indeed, those words corrode the very democracy that the noble Lord seeks to uphold. Please...
...forthwith ( Standing Order No. 83H), That a Committee be appointed to draw up Reasons to be assigned to the Lords for disagreeing to their amendments 78 and 79; That Jonathan Ashworth, Greg Hands, Sajid Javid, Chris Leslie and Stephen Williams be members of the Committee; That Sajid Javid be the Chair of the Committee; That three be the quorum of the Committee. Lord Bourne of Aberystwyth: ...that he does in chairing that excellent Select Committee. Without hesitation, I can say that the person who is driving this forward is, of course, my right honourable friend the Secretary of State, Sajid Javid. He is not doing it alone, as he indicated in the Statement, because it involves many other government departments. It is cross-government and involves education in particular. We...

Sajid Javid: The Minister will know that spending on welfare doubled under the previous Administration, yet the number of those living in poverty increased. Does he agree that what the previous Administration succeeded in doing was to create the most expensive poverty in history?
Sajid Javid: My constituents, like millions of people up and down the country, are very concerned about the direction of mortgage interest rates. Does my right hon. Friend agree that unprecedented transparency in our national finances of this kind will increase our credibility in the global financial markets and help to keep interest rates lower for longer?
Sajid Javid: Will my right hon. Friend commit to ensuring far greater scrutiny of EU regulation concerning financial matters than the previous Administration ever did, to make sure that it helps, rather than hinders, our banking system?
Sajid Javid: I thank the Chief Secretary for outlining Labour's cuts. Will he take this opportunity to remind the House just why we face such a difficult spending round?
Sajid Javid: I welcome the Minister to his new role. Does he agree that these banking reforms will help to boost confidence in the British economy once they are enacted? That will help to keep interest rates lower for longer, boost investment and create jobs.
Sajid Javid: What plans her Department has to reduce the level of regulation on farmers; and if she will make a statement.

Sajid Javid: On the eve of the Turkish Foreign Minister's visit to London, I am sure that my right hon. Friend will agree that Turkey is one of our foremost allies in a most volatile region. What steps can his military take to increase our strategic co-operation with Turkey?
Sajid Javid: I welcome the statement from my right hon. Friend. What efforts are being made to encourage the Pakistan armed forces to take greater responsibility for Taliban activity south of the border with Helmand?
Sajid Javid: My right hon. Friend will know that community hospitals, including The Princess of Wales community hospital in my constituency, have been under threat because of the policies of the previous Government. Does he agree that these new initiatives will make it more likely that local communities will take back control of their health care?
Sajid Javid: I shall keep my contribution brief. I congratulate my hon. Friend the Member for Lincoln (Karl McCartney) on making a very good maiden speech, and I draw hon. Members' attention to my entry in the declaration of Members' interests.
That Harriett Baldwin, Karen Bradley, Ms Karen Buck, Margaret Curran, Richard Graham, Kate Green, Mr Oliver Heald, Sajid Javid, Stephen Lloyd and Shabana Mahmood be members of the Work and Pensions Committee.- (Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, on behalf of the Committee of Selection.)
Sajid Javid: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer pursuant to the written ministerial statement of 26 May 2010, Official Report, columns 51-2WS, on Equitable Life, what progress he has made on his plans to make fair and transparent payments to Equitable Life policyholders through an independently designed payment scheme; and if he will make a statement.
Sajid Javid: To ask the Secretary of State for Justice if he will bring forward plans to create a new criminal offence of intentional trespass to enable people occupying property without the landowner's permission to be removed without the need for a court order.
