Jenni Minto: The number of alcohol-specific deaths in 2023 was published by National Records of Scotland on 10 September 2024. In the NHS Lothian health board area, there were 163 alcohol-specific deaths in 2023—an increase of 10 deaths from the 153 deaths that were reported in 2022.
Jenni Minto: We know that diagnosing brain cancer can be challenging, as symptoms are wide ranging and often vague. We continue to work with primary care to ensure that it has direct access to diagnostic tests and quality education sources. A clinical review of the Scottish referral guidelines for suspected cancer is under way and a new national headache referral pathway has been published to ensure that...
Jenni Minto: In primary care dental services, when a patient is registered for NHS dental services and has an urgent dental problem, they should be seen as soon as possible by their NHS dental practice and treated in line with their clinical priority. Unregistered patients are able to access urgent and emergency care via public dental service clinics. In common with the whole of NHS care...

Jenni Minto: I, too, thank Rona Mackay for bringing the debate to the chamber as part of international fetal alcohol spectrum disorder awareness month. Like Gillian Mackay, earlier in the session I met and spoke with people who live with FASD, and I was very struck by what I heard. Ben Macpherson has just spoken about support for adoptive parents, and I had a conversation about exactly that...
Jenni Minto: Under the new model for neonatal care, which was announced in July 2023, neonatal intensive care will be provided in a smaller number of units with co-located specialist services. The model is based on evidence and clinical advice from neonatal experts, which shows that the most pre-term and sickest babies have a better chance of survival when they are cared for in high-volume specialist...

Jenni Minto: The eligible areas for Scottish Government grants in NHS Fife have recently been reviewed and, to support access in local areas, they will be changing to Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline to reflect the areas of highest need. The Scottish dental access initiative for establishing, extending or relocating practices’ premises pays up to £100,000 for the first surgery and £25,000 for...

Sandesh Gulhane: ...to a record 15-year high. Will the cabinet secretary increase funding to treatment centres? Will he take the opportunity to offer a genuine apology to the families of those who died—unlike Jenni Minto, in her pathetic and woefully inadequate response in her STV interview yesterday?

Jenni Minto: The Scottish Government is currently reviewing the evaluation of the Penumbra Milestone alcohol-related brain damage—ARBD—unit that was undertaken by Dr Smith. The report highlights the improvement in cognitive function for people who were assessed in the evaluation period as well as reduced attendance rates at emergency departments. The Scottish Government will review the report’s...
Jenni Minto: The Scottish Government has disbursed cancer service allocations for this year to local health boards, including £4.6 million for systemic anti-cancer therapy and £11.3 million for cancer waiting times, in line with our overall strategic aim that, where possible, diagnostic tests and treatment are situated close to home and travel to specialist care is fully supported. In...
Jenni Minto: The Scottish Government commissioned independent modelling of neonatal intensive care in Scotland, and the report was published on 29 May. We have asked the regional chief executives to progress with development of implementation plans, with the expectation that implementation of the new model is phased over the next one to two years. Additionally, the Scottish Government, with the support of...
