Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and International Committee of the Red Cross (Status) Bill (26 Apr 2024)

Maria Miller: I thank my hon. Friend for giving way. My other hon. Friend, the Member for Hyndburn (Sara Britcliffe), is right to point out the need for us to explain the benefit of the CPA, because much of our day-to-day work as Members is connected to the grassroots of what we do in our constituencies, but the role of a parliamentarian is so much greater than that. I will give an example. My hon. Friend...

Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and International Committee of the Red Cross (Status) Bill (26 Apr 2024)

Maria Miller: My hon. Friend is right to bring up the importance of the international secretariat being here right in the heart of Westminster, and that has enabled us to work with it as CPA UK and as the UK Parliament. Around International Women’s Day, for example, we worked with it to deal with online abuse, which has just been raised. We set up—as we can now with the advent of the widespread use of...

Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and International Committee of the Red Cross (Status) Bill (26 Apr 2024)

Maria Miller: My hon. Friend is talking eloquently and with a great deal of passion about her visit to Grenada. Her visit was just one of a number of different delegations that the CPA UK sends out, thanks to the financial support of this place and the other place, to ensure that Members of Parliament can carry out the work and relationship development she mentions. Does she agree that it is very important...

Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and International Committee of the Red Cross (Status) Bill (26 Apr 2024)

Maria Miller: I beg to move, That the Bill be now read the Third time. This is an important moment for the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The Bill enables the Government to recognise both organisations individually as international organisations, conferring on them the legal capacities of a body corporate as well as specific privileges and...

Childcare Entitlements (23 Apr 2024)

Maria Miller: I very much welcome my hon. Friend’s statement, particularly because in Basingstoke two in three parents of two-year-olds are already using childcare, so they can apply for and benefit from this extra support. Will he talk a little more about how this will help give more parents the opportunity to get back into employment, which can be particularly important for us when we are looking to...

Hospice Funding (22 Apr 2024)

Maria Miller: May I add my thanks to my hon. Friends the Members for Hastings and Rye (Sally-Ann Hart) and for Darlington (Peter Gibson) for calling for this debate, and to the Backbench Business Committee for granting it? Above all, I thank my constituents, who have contacted me in great numbers to express their support for our hospice in Basingstoke, St Michael’s. That heartfelt support has been...

Levelling Up, Housing and Communities: Local Plans (22 Apr 2024)

Maria Miller: To help local authorities finalise their local plans, my hon. Friend and his ministerial colleagues have made significant changes to the planning rules. As a result, Wiltshire has cut its house building by 9,000, North Somerset has reduced its house building plans by 29%, and Three Rivers and others are doing likewise, to ensure that local plans better reflect their communities. Does my hon....

Maria Miller: What progress her Department has made on ensuring that more schools achieve good and outstanding ratings by Ofsted.

Education: Ofsted Ratings (11 Mar 2024)

Maria Miller: Nine out of 10 of the schools in my constituency are good or outstanding, reflecting this Government’s commitment to high standards and the incredible hard work of the staff and the school leadership, but special schools have struggled to achieve the same in my constituency. How is my right hon. Friend helping them to get to where we want them to be, where they can all be good or outstanding?

Public Bill Committee: Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and International Committee of the Red Cross (Status) Bill: Clause 4 - Orders in Council ( 6 Mar 2024)

Maria Miller: I beg to move amendment 3, clause 4, page 2, line 24, at end insert— “(1A) Before laying before Parliament a draft of a statutory instrument containing an Order in Council under section 1, the Secretary of State must consult— (a) the Chair of the United Kingdom Branch, and (b) the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. (1B) Before laying before Parliament a...

Public Bill Committee: Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and International Committee of the Red Cross (Status) Bill: Clause 4 - Orders in Council ( 6 Mar 2024)

Maria Miller: I stress that amendments 3 and 4 are probing amendments to allow the Minister to provide some assurances, not only to the people in this room, including myself, but to other members of the organisations we are talking about today. It is a long-standing practice that privileges and immunities are conferred by Order in Council, and that is not included in the Bill; this is merely paving...

Public Bill Committee: Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and International Committee of the Red Cross (Status) Bill: Clause 4 - Orders in Council ( 6 Mar 2024)

Maria Miller: I am grateful for the opportunity to respond to the Minister’s comments. I am reassured that the Government intend to fully involve the organisations in the drawing up of secondary legislation. It is an obvious thing to say, but it is good to hear the Minister put that on the record. With that in mind and having received those assurances, I beg to ask leave to withdraw the amendment.

You can also do this from the main search box by putting exact words in quotes: like "cycling" or "hutton report"

By default, we show words related to your search term, like “cycle” and “cycles” in a search for cycling. Putting the word in quotes, like "cycling", will stop this.
