Public Bill Committee: Criminal Justice Bill: Examination of Witnesses (12 Dec 2023)

Angela Eagle: Thank you. It looks like there are no further questions from Members. I thank the witnesses for their evidence. We will move on to the next panel.

Beneficial Ownership Registers: Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies ( 7 Dec 2023)

Angela Eagle: The legitimate public interest filter, as the Minister calls it, stands or falls on how “legitimate public interest” is defined. At the moment, it appears to be far too narrowly defined, which undermines the purpose of the transparency. Will he take into account the fact that the filter, as it exists, does not let any light through and is rendering the openness of the list moot?

Beneficial Ownership Registers: Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies ( 7 Dec 2023)

Angela Eagle: Does the hon. Gentleman agree that ensuring we have open and transparent registers of beneficial ownership is only the first step in dealing with what is a very well established, very difficult and growing threat?

Beneficial Ownership Registers: Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies ( 7 Dec 2023)

Angela Eagle: I thank my right hon. Friend the Member for Barking (Dame Margaret Hodge) for securing this debate, and for her consistent and tireless work in tackling the scourge of illicit finance. As she said, the introduction of public registers of beneficial ownership in our country’s offshore financial centres ought not to need debating, and it should have happened many years ago. Yesterday, after...

Beneficial Ownership Registers: Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies ( 7 Dec 2023)

Angela Eagle: Surely, every single citizen of this country has a legitimate interest in closing the kinds of loopholes that have allowed rotten, dirty money to come flooding into our jurisdiction. Does my right hon. Friend agree that it has had huge detrimental effects on ordinary people—who do not have trust funds and are unlikely to inherit anything—such as the huge increases in property prices that...

Cyber Interference: UK Democracy ( 7 Dec 2023)

Angela Eagle: The Minister contributed to a very good debate in the UK-EU Parliamentary Partnership Assembly, which met in Westminster earlier this week, and touched on some of these issues. We are clearly dealing with hybrid warfare—there is no other phrase for it. Although I commend the Minister for coming to the House to give us this information, the response of sanctioning two people seems rather...

Gender Recognition ( 6 Dec 2023)

Angela Eagle: Will the Secretary of State talk about what the implications would be if sex were defined in law as biological? Would existing trans people have to act in all public appearances in accordance with their biological sex, so, unless they had a gender recognition certificate, trans men would have to use female toilets and trans women would have to use male toilets? I am genuinely trying to find...

Rates of tobacco products duty (22 Nov 2023)

Angela Eagle: I also welcome the Minister to his position. Does he not distinguish between borrowing for capital investment and borrowing for current expenditure? If he does not, he has a very peculiar view of the national accounts.

Rates of tobacco products duty (22 Nov 2023)

Angela Eagle: It is a pleasure to follow the right hon. Member for Witham (Priti Patel), who made an interesting and thoughtful speech. The backdrop of the autumn statement is an ongoing cost of living crisis and a flailing Government who cannot defend their appalling record in office and know that the general election is fast approaching. The fifth Tory Prime Minister in 13 years has had four relaunches...

Rates of tobacco products duty (22 Nov 2023)

Angela Eagle: My hon. Friend is making some important points. Does he agree that, if it is the decisions of the Bank of England that have halved inflation, as the Opposition think, the Government cannot go around claiming credit for it?

Rates of tobacco products duty (22 Nov 2023)

Angela Eagle: On that point, will the hon. Lady give way?

Rates of tobacco products duty (22 Nov 2023)

Angela Eagle: I welcome the hon. Lady to her new post. I hope she has an enjoyable time at the Treasury, as I did when I was there. Will she confirm that figures show that this Parliament is the highest tax-raising Parliament since records began, in all our history, even after today’s statement?

Rates of tobacco products duty (22 Nov 2023)

Angela Eagle: You’ve said that already.

Autumn Statement (22 Nov 2023)

Angela Eagle: The Chancellor did not mention the freezing of tax thresholds, which is due to rake in £52 billion in the next six years. Was that an omission, or is he leaving the freeze in place?
