Northern Ireland Assembly: Regional Development: Bus Lanes ( 6 May 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I thank the Minister for that response. Has he considered car sharing as a way of improving traffic flow? People could enter into a formal arrangement with one another to share a car and thereby use the faster lane.

Northern Ireland Assembly: Health, Social Services and Public Safety: Stroke Strategy ( 6 May 2008)

Carmel Hanna: 2. asked the Minister of Health, Social Services and Public Safety what commitment he will give to recognising an acute stroke as a medical emergency as part of the stroke strategy.  (AQO 3304/08)

Northern Ireland Assembly: Health, Social Services and Public Safety: Stroke Strategy ( 6 May 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I thank the Minister, and I am sure that he, like me, knows that speed is of the essence — we can compare strokes with heart attacks. Has the Minister anticipated the training needs involved? He will realise how important it is to get physiotherapy and occupational therapy services in place quickly when someone has a stroke, if that person is to make a good recovery.

Northern Ireland Assembly: Adjournment: Regeneration of the Sandy Row area in South Belfast (29 Apr 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I thank Mr Spratt for securing the Adjournment debate on the regeneration of Sandy Row in my constituency of South Belfast. I think of Sandy Row as the area from the Boyne Bridge, over the railway line, to the bottom of the Lisburn Road. However, too many years ago, when I came to train to be a nurse at Belfast City Hospital, Sandy Row was bustling and thriving. It was full of small shops and...

Northern Ireland Assembly: Private Members’ Business: Access to Health Service Dental Treatment (29 Apr 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I thank those who moved the motion. As has already been said, my colleague Tommy Gallagher and I previously brought a similar motion to the Floor, but unfortunately the situation has not improved for people trying to access dental services. It has already been stated that Northern Ireland has the worst levels of oral health when compared to the UK and Republic of Ireland, and we know that...

Northern Ireland Assembly: Finance And Personnel: Post Offices: Rates Relief (28 Apr 2008)

Carmel Hanna: 6. asked the Minister of Finance and Personnel if he will include Post Offices in his consideration of small business rates relief, as undertaken in Wales.            (AQO 3141/08)

Northern Ireland Assembly: Finance And Personnel: Post Offices: Rates Relief (28 Apr 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I thank the Minister for that helpful and comprehensive answer. I do not know that I even need to ask whether the Department of Finance and Personnel needs to consider any other options; it will take me a while to digest what the Minister said.

Northern Ireland Assembly: Private Members’ Business: Post Office Closures (21 Apr 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I beg to move That this Assembly notes with concern the recent announcement that 96 local post offices are to close or be replaced by an “outreach” service; believes that the six-week consultation period is too short; further believes such closures and service reductions will have an adverse impact on community and social infrastructure in rural and urban areas and will adversely affect...

Northern Ireland Assembly: Private Members’ Business: Post Office Closures (21 Apr 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I agree with the Member. The Post Office has not given any reasonable explanation as to how it can contemplate doing such a thing. An economic appraisal should apply to every store that the Post Office is proposing to close, and must take into account not only quantifiable factors such as profitability, but non-quantifiable factors, some of which were mentioned by my colleague. Equally valid...

Northern Ireland Assembly: Private Members’ Business: Post Office Closures (21 Apr 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I could not have put that better. There are specific questions for the Post Office. Has it taken account of the specific requirements of public bodies to undertake section 75 equality impact assessments on closures? If the Post Office has done that, will it make those assessments available? Has it considered making full economic assessments of closure decisions, and will those be made...

Northern Ireland Assembly: Private Members’ Business: Post Office Closures (21 Apr 2008)

Carmel Hanna: To finish, we must make the case for the proposals —

Northern Ireland Assembly: Private Members’ Business: Cancelled Clinics (15 Apr 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I support the motion and the amendment and thank those Members who tabled them. Unfortunately, the consequences of missed appointments, which are a common occurrence in outpatient clinics, are not particularly well known. They include the cost to the Health Service, and to other patients, who are bumped back each time. When I examined the Comptroller and Auditor General for Northern...

Northern Ireland Assembly: Private Members’ Business: International Development ( 1 Apr 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I beg to move That this Assembly: recognises its responsibility to reflect Northern Ireland’s concerns about, and charity towards, the developing world; acknowledges the international support afforded to help resolve Northern Ireland’s problems; commits, in line with the United Kingdom and Irish Governments, the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly, to embedding support for the...

Northern Ireland Assembly: Private Members’ Business: International Development ( 1 Apr 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I thank the co-proposers of the motion, each of whom, I am sure, will bring their perspective to the debate. It is my hope that the motion will receive the widest possible support. I also thank the Coalition of Aid and Development Agencies in Northern Ireland for its help in drafting the motion, which covers the major aims of the Assembly’s all-party group on international development that...

Northern Ireland Assembly: Private Members’ Business: Combating Underage Drinking ( 1 Apr 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I support the motion, because we must get to grips with the problem of underage drinking.

Northern Ireland Assembly: Private Members’ Business: Combating Underage Drinking ( 1 Apr 2008)

Carmel Hanna: Underage drinking is a crucial issue for our society. Unfortunately, it is widely recognised that young people are drinking larger amounts of alcohol and doing so more often. The Health Promotion Agency’s report on drinking behaviour among young people in Northern Ireland demonstrates that disturbing trends are emerging. Males and females as young as 11 drink excessively. Some young people...

Northern Ireland Assembly: Adjournment: Housing in the Village area of South Belfast (10 Mar 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I thank Mr Spratt for raising the issue of housing in the Village area. As Members will know, most of the Village is in the Blackstaff ward, and I was first elected to Belfast City Council for the Balmoral electoral area in 1997 and then to the Assembly in 1998. I hope that Mr Spratt feels that the immediate £7 million housing regeneration package for the Village that was announced by...

Northern Ireland Assembly: Committee Business: Hospital-Acquired Infections ( 4 Mar 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I did not say that. [Laughter.]

Northern Ireland Assembly: Committee Business: Hospital-Acquired Infections ( 4 Mar 2008)

Carmel Hanna: On a point of order, Mr Deputy Speaker. I am sorry, but I did not say that the Chairperson of the Health Committee did not allow me to speak.

Northern Ireland Assembly: Committee Business: Hospital-Acquired Infections ( 4 Mar 2008)

Carmel Hanna: I support the amendment.

Find this exact word or phrase

You can also do this from the main search box by putting exact words in quotes: like "cycling" or "hutton report"

By default, we show words related to your search term, like “cycle” and “cycles” in a search for cycling. Putting the word in quotes, like "cycling", will stop this.

Excluding these words

You can also do this from the main search box by putting a minus sign before words you don’t want: like hunting -fox

We also support a bunch of boolean search modifiers, like AND and NEAR, for precise searching.
