On Thursday 22 February 2007, I collected my sons new passport at the UK Consulate's Passport Office at 18 bis (that's how you write '18A' in French) rue d'Anjou in the 8th arrondisement of Paris.
The person who checked my ID and handed me the passport had an accent that surprised me.
I remarked that that was a very interesting accent to hear in a British Embassy and asked where she was from. She looked very long and very hard at me and reflected for an awfully long time before she replied "I'm from the States".
