In the UK Parliament, committees are groups of MPs or Peers who examine specific issues in more detail than can be done in debates.
Some committees focus on checking the government’s decisions and spending, while others investigate specific topics and proposed legislation.
Baroness Smith of Newnham is currently a member of the following committees:
The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill Committee was appointed to consider the safeguards and procedures contained in theTerminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Billby hearing evidence including from professional bodies, those with professional experience of coronial services, and ministers.
Owing to the short timeframe for the inquiry and the limited scope of the Committee as established in the motion to appoint it, the Committee is not seeking or accepting written evidence other than from invited witnesses.
The evidence programme will consist of oral evidence sessions with witnesses, which will be broadcast live and transcripts of which will be published on the Committee's website.
When the Committee has completed its work in early November and published the evidence it has received, it is expected that the whole House will continuescrutiny of the Bill in the usual way.
