  • Rwanda Treaty - Private Notice Question 8 Dec 2023

My Lords, can I just ask about the deterrent aspect of this issue? By my calculations, more than 30,000 refugees are coming per year and so far we have heard today that something like 100 will be going back. Now, my maths is not wonderful, but that to me is less than 1%. Why does the Minister believe that will be a deterrent for anybody fleeing war or imprisonment? Following on from that,...
  • King’s Speech - Debate (2nd Day) 8 Nov 2023

My Lords, I add my sadness at the passing of Lord Judge, whose fierce intellectual clarity and moral integrity I so greatly admired. I also congratulate the three maiden speakers and draw attention to my interests, as set out in the register, especially those relating to private security. The Covid inquiry continues to reveal the machismo, in-fighting and incompetence of recent Governments....
  • Higher Education Reform - Statement 20 Jul 2023

My Lords, I think there are no further questions. House adjourned at 3.58 pm.

I think noble Lords will be pleased about that, because I have a dreadful cough which might manifest itself in the next five minutes. I apologise if it interrupts what I want to say. I was...
  • Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill - Committee (4th Day): Amendment 81 6 Mar 2023

I apologise to the noble Baroness for what happened earlier. Clause 10 agreed. Schedule 2 agreed. Clause 11 agreed. Clause 12: Power to restate retained EU law
  • Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill - Committee (4th Day): Amendment 81 6 Mar 2023

The Question is that Clause 10 stand part of the Bill.
  • Levelling-up and Regeneration Bill - Second Reading 17 Jan 2023

My Lords, first, I add my congratulations to our two excellent maiden speakers in this debate. I look forward to hearing more from them in the future. Coming so late to this wide-ranging debate, is there anything new left to say? “No”, I hear your Lordships say. That is probably the answer; however, I thought I would therefore take this opportunity to reiterate some of the broad themes...
