Although I am sure the hon. Gentleman knows this already, it might be useful to tell the Committee that although the EU has not yet given permission for such scanners to become part of the primary means of checking security at an EU level, it has not been ruled out. The matter is subject to further consideration by scientific experts, so the battle is by no means lost. The Government continue to believe that the technology being used at Manchester airport is very effective, so we will continue to engage with the EU with a view to ensuring that the technology’s role in the security process is enlarged in future and goes beyond the present pilot studies.
