  • European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill 22 Oct 2019

I am minded to vote in favour on Second Reading not because I support the deal but because I do not; I want to improve the deal so that it reflects the manifesto that I stood on and respects the referendum result, and so that we leave with a deal that protects jobs and trade. Does my right hon. Friend understand my motivation?
  • Prime Minister’s Statement: European Union (Withdrawal) Acts 19 Oct 2019

Will my hon. Friend give way?
  • Oral Answers to Questions — Justice: Support for Victims of Crime in Court 8 Oct 2019

Support for victims is not good enough, so can I appeal to the Government to change the law to remove the automatic entitlement of joint assets from those who have attempted to murder their partners? The case I am working on sees the perpetrator demand £90,000 from the woman he attempted to kill, or, as she puts it, a £3,000 reward for every stab wound.
  • Prime Minister's Update 25 Sep 2019

I campaigned to remain, the Prime Minister campaigned to leave, but I have always respected the result of the referendum. To be honest, I do not want to work with him any more than he would want to work with me, but we both know that there are areas where both parties reached agreement in those cross-party talks. Will he publish the areas of agreement from those cross-party talks and use them...
  • Children and Mental Health Services — [Mark Pritchard in the Chair] 16 Jul 2019

I thank the hon. Gentleman for securing this important debate. My constituent Elodie Fleet, who is now 18 years old, experienced anxiety, which came to a head at the age of 13. She wanted to see the school counsellor, but her needs were not deemed to be urgent enough because “she hadn’t tried to hang herself or taken a blade to her wrists.” I hope the Minister will say how we can get...
  • BBC — [Phil Wilson in the Chair] 15 Jul 2019

A manifesto promise broken by this Government reads: “We will maintain all other pensioner benefits, including free bus passes, eye tests, prescriptions and TV licences, for the duration of this parliament.” Does my hon. Friend agree that this broken promise is letting down not just older people, but trust in politics?
  • Oral Answers to Questions — Prime Minister: Engagements 10 Jul 2019

A Nottinghamshire woman whose husband is in prison for her attempted murder was yesterday served with a letter from his lawyers demanding £100,000 as a settlement in their divorce. She would have to sell her family home to give him that money, and it is simply wrong. Would the Prime Minister support a change in the law to remove automatic entitlement to joint assets in such cases?
  • Oral Answers to Questions — Justice: Family Courts: Rape and Domestic Abuse Survivors 9 Jul 2019

I wrote to the Minister requesting the removal of automatic entitlement to joint assets from those guilty of attempting to murder their spouse. In his response, he expressed concern that to do so may punish the offender twice. But that is exactly what is happening to the victim: they are subject first to attempted murder and then to continued abuse through the courts and the potential loss of...
