Former MP for Hemel Hempstead

As a result of COVID-19, some MPs have been less able to vote in Parliament, and this will be reflected in their voting record.

11th May to 2nd June 2020

All MPs could vote remotely through an online voting tool. Votes cast remotely are shown as normal on the TheyWorkForYou voting record.

2nd to 9th June 2020

The option of online voting was removed, and a number of MPs may have been unable to vote because they were not physically able to attend.

10th June 2020 onwards

The requirements on proxy voting were relaxed, allowing MPs to designate another MP to cast a vote on their behalf.

If an MP votes by proxy, it is effectively exactly the same as if they cast the vote in person and it shows up on their TheyWorkForYou voting record.

MPs are not required to designate a proxy, and may instead pair with an opposing MP to miss a vote. Parliament does not record when two MPs have come to a pairing arrangement, so on TheyWorkForYou, they will both appear to have been absent for the vote.

We will update this information if the situation changes. See more detail on votes during the COVID-19 period here.

  • Orders of the Day — New Towns Bill 1 Dec 1958

I must first apologise for being unavoidably absent during part of the debate, but I could not alter a previously arranged meeting. As one of the few hon. Members who represent new towns I am glad of the opportunity to support the Bill. I represented my constituency for many years before a new town was thought of and, therefore, I have had the opportunity of watching the development of the...
  • Orders of the Day — LIFE PEERAGES BILL [Lords] 2 Apr 1958

In view of last week's debate, I must say a few words about Clause 3. For years all the women's organisations in the country have been pressing and fighting for fair and equal treatment for women, and we women Members of Parliament have supported them on every possible occasion. Since women have been allowed to sit in the House of Commons pressure has been brought on all Governments to...
  • Orders of the Day — New Towns Bill 28 Nov 1957

I am very glad to have the opportunity of saying a few words in support of the Bill. I find that, unfortunately, even today few people know much about new towns or really take an interest in them unless they live in them or represent them or have something to do with them personally. I am afraid that that applies also to a large number of Members of Parliament. I happen to be chairman of a...
