Former MP for Bristol South
I do not belong to the Church of England and I am not a Roman Catholic; I represent the rather big body of Free Church opinion, and they look upon this Bill with favour because they believe in civil and religious liberty. I have just had sent me a Resolution from the Committee of the Evangelical Free Churches. After very carefully considering the Bill, they have passed a Resolution in which...
Certainly, a Wesleyan should not interfere any more than a Roman Catholic or a Jew. I hope the time is soon coming when the Church of England will have complete control over its own livings. Therefore, I would appeal to the supporters of the Bill to agree to the suggestion of the Solicitor-General and take out the reference to this particular old Act. I think, if that were done, it would...
A shilling a week per man or per bath?
I should not intervene in this debate to-day but for the fact that this Amendment is one to which I referred yesterday. My criticism is that there are no safeguards in the Bill; at least the safeguards are not sufficient. I have no intention of discussing the merits of the West Ham case. I have got sufficient data to judge of that case; but this Bill goes very far beyond West Ham. In confers powers upon the Minister of Health which will have to be used with great care. I wish the right hon. Gentleman would accept the Amendment in some form. There are not sufficient safeguards in the Bill. A Select Committee is...
I beg to move, in page 1, line 6, after the word "Where," to insert the words at any time before the first day of January, nineteen hundred and twenty-eight. It is obvious that the point of the Amendment is to limit the period of the operation of the Bill. In introducing the Bill, the Minister of Health told us that it was the intention of the Government to introduce next year a very...
This Measure deals with one of the fundamental principles of local government, and my contention is that if you are taking such extreme powers as those contained in this Bill it should only be done for a limited period. I would like to ask the Minister of Health if he will meet us if we agree to a compromise and accept a period of 18 months.
May I ask for a reply to my question?
