In complying with your request, Mr. Speaker, I am sorry that I shall be unable to follow the thoughtful and constructive speech of the hon. Member for Cheltenham (Mr. Dodds-Parker)—I would like to call him my hon. Friend— to which we all listened with appreciation. The only point on which I disagree with him is that I do not believe that to announce a delay in the date of withdrawal from...

I certainly had not suggested that. Possibly the particular comment in question is better left now where it was. This raises the whole question of outside pressures on Greece. That in turn raises what is, in my opinion, the fundamental question that any Greek, or any friend of Greece, has to ask himself about the present situation. In my view, there are only two alternatives: the overthrow...

No. I think that the Greek Government have followed the normal procedure on this, but it would be wrong to pursue that subject in this debate, because it has already been dealt with fully. I would only add that the Greek Government publicly and privately reject any responsibility for such actions. I am glad to say that they are now considering a new way to answer these allegations, and, if...

I ask the Government what has happened to disarmament, and I put to them some facts which have caused me some anxiety and alarm. Since they came to power I do not recall that the British delegate has ever really tried to make the Committee of 18 carry out the General Assembly's instruction of December, 1963 to resume with energy and determination its negotiations on G.C.D. On the contrary,...
  • Oral Answers to Questions — Greece 8 Jul 1968

I think my right hon. Friend is aware that I was in Athens this morning. Is my right hon. Friend aware that recent statements have caused widespread indignation and offence in Greece among critics of the Government and others and among British residents in that country? Although the present Government did not come to power by democratic methods—[Interruption]—is my hon. Friend aware...
  • Orders of the Day — Greek Political Prisoners 11 Apr 1968

I apologise sincerely to my hon. Friend the Member for Croydon, South (Mr. Winnick). I made a mistake about the timetable for the debate and missed his speech. I am very sorry. I am about to make what may prove to be a highly unpopular speech with many of my colleagues and with large sections of the British public who, in my belief, have been misled by political speeches, by sections of...
  • Orders of the Day — Greek Political Prisoners 11 Apr 1968

May I read the quotation from the Minister who gave a statement on 8th April? It states: There are international conventions and bodies competent on this subject as well as the Red Cross, and all facilities will be given to these Committees to make on-the-spot representations".
  • Orders of the Day — Greek Political Prisoners 11 Apr 1968

Could I draw to the Minister's attention the fact that a number of reports by the International Red Cross have been released? I have them here and they are quite bulky. I believe it to be the intention of the Greek Government to give these facilities for further investigations and to release subsequent reports.
