Former MP for Beckenham
Experiments with a loudspeaker device are continuing. But even if these were successful, which I am bound to say is unlikely, the cost of a full installation would be very great. I am afraid I see no prospect at present of finding an effective method of dislodging the starlings which is both humane and economical.
I do not think I could control the sparrowhawk or the owl, and if it were a stuffed one I think the starlings would get used to it quite soon.
None as yet. The first stage of the building is not planned to start for about two years, and it will be at least six months before planning has proceeded far enough to enable me to make any decision on these questions.
While I am entirely in sympathy with the hon. Gentleman in appreciating the desirability of providing artistic embellishment for suitable buildings, I must, of course, have regard to the cost. I will consider the matter directly the plans have reached a suitable stage.
I will bear that point in mind.
As the list is long, I will, with the hon. Member's permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.
Most of the buildings are for civil work. I think perhaps the hon. Gentleman should look at the list, when I shall be very glad to answer any further questions.
Cars parked diagonally would require between 19 and 20 feet of carriageway for each line of cars parked, as against about 6 feet for cars parked parallel to the kerb. If suitably widened, the roads in Hyde Park and St. James's Park at present designated for parking might provide space for about 75 per cent. more cars. This would involve large expenditure and the sacrifice of many trees.
