  • Petitions: Badman Report (Gosport) 16 Mar 2010

I am grateful to have the opportunity to present a public petition signed by a considerable number of constituents in the Gosport constituency who are supportive of home education and concerned about the recommendations in the Badman report. The petition was collected by my constituent Tracy Weaver and her husband Dr. John Weaver, who, together with their children Abigail, Rebecca, Charlotte...
  • IBM Pension Scheme 13 Jan 2010

One thing this Government have done is greatly to increase the responsibilities of trustees, one of which is to ensure fairness between the different members of the pension scheme. Will the Minister join me in encouraging the trustees to think carefully about their responsibilities in this field?

  • Oral Answers to Questions — Defence: Reserve Forces 2 Nov 2009

When I asked a written question last week about the future of the Browndown training facility in my constituency, I was told that there was a review of operations and several rationalisation measures had been identified. If rationalisation means the closure or restricted use of training facilities, it would have a devastating effect on cadet and reserve activity. What future can we look to...
  • Oral Answers to Questions — Prime Minister: Reforming Financial Markets 8 Jul 2009

Does the Chancellor agree that there are two distinct roles to be carried out, one being the detailed supervision of the rules, best carried out by the FSA, and the other the overall financial strategic control of banks? If the latter role is to be carried out by the Bank of England, will he ensure that the Bank is properly resourced?
  • Bill Presented: Marine and Coastal Access Bill [ Lords] 23 Jun 2009

Thank you, Mr. Deputy Speaker, for giving me the chance to follow the hon. Member for Gower (Mr. Caton), whose speech was steeped in the beauty of his lovely constituency. The Bill carries with it a great deal of hope. It is rare for me to receive as many messages from constituents asking me to support a Bill and press for it to be brought forward as I have on this one, beginning some years...
  • Oral Answers to Questions — Prime Minister: Tribute to Mr. Speaker 17 Jun 2009

I did not expect this to be a reunion of the panel that was chosen to select your malt whisky, Mr. Speaker, but it is. I was also a member of that committee. The right hon. Member for Manchester, Gorton (Sir Gerald Kaufman) made passing reference to the Speaker's Committee on the Electoral Commission, which has been one of your important roles. It has been given specific tasks in relation to...
  • Oral Answers to Questions — Defence: Training (New Equipment) 1 Jun 2009

When short-term gaps in equipment emerge, they are met by urgent operational requirements—UORs—which can mean that although equipment is put in place, which is welcome, troops do not have the proper training on working with that equipment. Would not a better long-term plan be a strategic review to assess more accurately equipment needs against operational requirements?
