Paul Berry

Former Independent MLA for Newry and Armagh

As a result of COVID-19, some MPs have been less able to vote in Parliament, and this will be reflected in their voting record.

11th May to 2nd June 2020

All MPs could vote remotely through an online voting tool. Votes cast remotely are shown as normal on the TheyWorkForYou voting record.

2nd to 9th June 2020

The option of online voting was removed, and a number of MPs may have been unable to vote because they were not physically able to attend.

10th June 2020 onwards

The requirements on proxy voting were relaxed, allowing MPs to designate another MP to cast a vote on their behalf.

If an MP votes by proxy, it is effectively exactly the same as if they cast the vote in person and it shows up on their TheyWorkForYou voting record.

MPs are not required to designate a proxy, and may instead pair with an opposing MP to miss a vote. Parliament does not record when two MPs have come to a pairing arrangement, so on TheyWorkForYou, they will both appear to have been absent for the vote.

We will update this information if the situation changes. See more detail on votes during the COVID-19 period here.

  • Northern Ireland Assembly: Private Members’ Business: Autism 9 Jan 2007

I support today’s important motion and welcome the debate. However, it is unfortunate that the amendment takes the focus away from the motion and from the message that Members are trying to send out. We must have a Northern Ireland centre of excellence, rather than one that is cross-border and politically motivated. Such a centre of excellence was hailed by Sinn Féin and others. It was...
  • Northern Ireland Assembly: Private Members’ Business: Protection for the Elderly 19 Dec 2006

As the youngest Member of this Assembly, I support the motion that stands in the names of Lord Morrow and Mr Paisley Jnr. I support the call to protect, assist and develop provisions for the elderly in Northern Ireland. I also support the motion’s call to appoint an interim commissioner for the elderly. It is important that such a commissioner works closely with the two main advocates for...
  • Northern Ireland Assembly: Private Members’ Business: Fire And Rescue Service Draft Integrated Risk Management Plan 11 Dec 2006

I rise to support the motion and the amendment. The amendment, placed in Mr Storey’s name, strengthens and enhances the motion. I do not say that from a political perspective, but because an important, clear and concise message must be sent to the Minister, the Chief Fire Officer and the chairman of the Fire Authority for Northern Ireland. I served on the Health, Social Services and Public...
