My Lords, how many prisoners who have taken their own lives were serving indeterminate sentences? Has the Minister read the very good report on the mental health problems of people who are awarded this sentence? When they look up their sentence on a computer, it comes up as 99 years. It is therefore a cause of considerable mental distress.

Thank you Lord Ramsbotham for continuing to highlight the causes of mental distress as opposed to the statistical facts on types of distress.
I fear until we are all more open to how socio-economic factors affect many peopel (some more vulnerable than others)then sadly a large majority will continue to mis-understand the potential triggers of mental distress and heightened anxiety.
