What representations have you made to the government about securing funding for a universal basic income trial in London?

The costs of a Universal Basic Income trial in London would be significant and certainly require commitment from the Government. You will be aware that a major trial of Universal Basic Income is currently underway in Wales. This pilot will provide a test for the stated benefits of basic income, such as addressing poverty and unemployment and improving health and financial wellbeing. I will follow the outcomes of this trial with interest. I remain committed to exploring a range of options for supporting Londoners in financial hardship.

In the context of the current cost of living crisis the existing welfare system remains the most effective tool to provide immediate and targeted financial support. However, the Government’s decisions not to uprate benefits in line with inflation in April and to retain policies like the benefit cap and the two-child limit are reducing its effectiveness. I will continue to urge the Government to revisit those decisions.
