You will no doubt be aware of recent University and College Union strikes affecting a number of universities in London. Will you raise the issue of fair pay and conditions for staff in higher education with the Department for Education?

The status of London’s Higher Education sector as world-leading for research, innovation and skills, is vital to the UK’s international competitiveness. Recruiting, retaining and supporting the progression of staff plays a key role in this.

I regret the fact that the disagreement over pensions, pay and conditions has led to further strike action. I have written to the Secretary of State for Education urging him to work with trade unions, universities and the Office for Students to try and resolve these issues and avert future disruption that industrial action will invariably cause.

I will continue to encourage businesses and companies in London, including higher education institutions, to sign up to the Good Work Standard and ensure their employees are treated fairly – with fair pay being an essential element of this.
