May I join Barry Gardiner in congratulating all Members who contributed to this excellent debate about what the motion rightly describes as the “defining issue” facing the United Kingdom?

We agree that it is entirely proper that Parliament should scrutinise the Government’s approach to the process of leaving the European Union and that there should be full and continuing debate on that process. It is beyond doubt—this was fully accepted by the shadow Secretary of State, Keir Starmer, and many other hon. Members who have spoken today—that the Government have received clear instructions from the British people that Britain should leave the EU.
