I am sorry to interrupt the hon. Gentleman's well thought out speech. The Government say that the car scrappage scheme is a green measure, but surely so much carbon dioxide is used in the production of a new car that it is actually an anti-green measure.

Peter Bone is right - the car scrapping scheme is very far from being green. It demonstrates short-termism rather than sustainability and more carbon will be emitted in manufacture of the new cars than will be saved in their use.

The economic downturn is an opportunity to switch from car production into the building of railways and other measures to reduce car use. If we fail in this any recovery from the downturn will quickly be reversed as oil prices rise.
