I am grateful for the hon. Gentleman's welcome, but I cannot go along the road with him in relation to his flat tax proposal, although it was at one time the stated policy of the shadow Chancellor.

He cannot go along the road of this eminently sensible measure since it would simplify the tax system and make people better off, by some £1,000 per annum, and take over 4million lower paid out of income tax altogether. Socialists are about complex tax systems and punishing people.
