On the point made by my right hon. Friend John Battle, I agree that we need to do more to encourage the take-up of the working tax credit. The take-up of the child tax credit is quite substantial. I am grateful to my right hon. Friend overall for the welcome that he has given.

Mr. Speaker, if my statement is not now in the Vote Office, it ought to be, and I will take steps to make sure that it is.

It would be far simpler and certainly less beaurocratic to scrap the rediculous tax credit system and increase tax allowances.Most people can manage their own money with much more "prudence"than any unqualified Chancellor!
In your next Commons speach perhaps you would pass on the comments of us "strangled"small business owners.
