I have been asked to reply. As the House will be aware, my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister is in Washington today for discussions with President Bush ahead of the G8 summit in June. Later today, Mr. Dorrell, my hon. Friend Mr. Sarwar and I will meet members of the family of Madeleine McCann, at their request. I am sure that the thoughts of the whole House will be with them at this terrible time.

Much of the discussion below concerns carbon control, a necessity in the era of rapid global warming. Yet much of the problem of warming is attributed to the burning of large tracts of the Amazon.
Might not the Government consider international means for persuasion of Amazon states to block such globally damaging activity? Might not the carbon trade-off system be extended to include payments to Amazon countries to curtail forest destruction?
What good does it do to curb carbon emissions on the home front if they are more than counterbalanced by rain-forest destruction?
