The hon. Gentleman fails to recognise that thousands more people are now employed in the telecommunications industry, with Mercury and all the cable operators throughout the country. Thousands more people are involved in telecommunications as a whole. Does the hon. Gentleman argue that BT should have sustained the number of people who were employed in that industry, irrespective of demand for its product?
