I have to inform the House, in accordance with the Royal Assent Act 1967, that the Queen has signified Her Royal Assent to the following Acts:

  1. 1. Law Reform (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Scotland) Act 1980.
  2. 2. Married Women's Policies of Assurance (Scotland) (Amendment) Act 1980.
  3. 3. Imprisonment (Temporary Provisions) Act 1980.
  4. 4. Inverclyde District Council Order Confirmation Act 1980.
  5. 5. City of Dundee District Council Order Confirmation Act 1980.
  6. 6. United Reformed Church Lion Walk Colchester Act 1980.

Amendment

As a bill passes through Parliament, MPs and peers may suggest amendments - or changes - which they believe will improve the quality of the legislation.

Many hundreds of amendments are proposed by members to major bills as they pass through committee stage, report stage and third reading in both Houses of Parliament.

In the end only a handful of amendments will be incorporated into any bill.

The Speaker - or the chairman in the case of standing committees - has the power to select which amendments should be debated.
