Few firms would employ a person in their offices who could not read or write the Queen's English, so we can exclude that as a rather extreme case. That is not what we are talking about. We are talking about a quite average applicant for a job in an estate office, who is then able to make a jolly good go of it, becomes a good salesman, is very competent, learns the terms of the trade generally and is of the highest integrity, but does not want to join a professional body.
