16 December 1964
asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what representations he has received to discontinue state management of premises for the sale of liquor; and what replies he has sent.
Mr William Ross
, Kilmarnock
Since I took office one letter has been received on this subject. The reply said that this was not a part of the social field in which the Government were contemplating legislation.
Mr Hugh Brown
, Glasgow Provan
While thanking my right hon. Friend for his reply, and in the absence of representations to get rid of the premises, may I ask if he will agree that this appears to be a profitable field for public ownership, apparently giving satisfaction to customers? In view of that, will he give sympathetic consideration to any representations to extend this field of public ownership?
Mr William Ross
, Kilmarnock
I shall give due consideration to any representations which I receive. There is no doubt that the state management premises are generally regarded as giving a good standard of service.
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
