Mr. J. Wells:

asked the Minister of Public Building and Works how many married quarters for the army Department he expects to complete in the United Kingdom in 1964, 1965–66 and 1966–67, respectively.

Miss Lee:

About 1,700 in 1964–65, 2,400 in 1965–66, and 2,100 in 1966–67.

Mr. Wells:

May we be assured that these figures will be adhered to, or even increased, and that there will be no slowing down of the momentum in providing married quarters in the United Kingdom?

Miss Lee:

It is the Government's intention to give a higher priority to the provision of good living quarters for the Services than has been given hi the past. For example, the figure of 1,700 for 1964–65 is an increase on that for any of the previous three years. We intend to see that both brick supply and labour supply are increased in order that we can do what the hon. Gentleman wants done.

Minister

Ministers make up the Government and almost all are members of the House of Lords or the House of Commons. There are three main types of Minister. Departmental Ministers are in charge of Government Departments. The Government is divided into different Departments which have responsibilities for different areas. For example the Treasury is in charge of Government spending. Departmental Ministers in the Cabinet are generally called 'Secretary of State' but some have special titles such as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Ministers of State and Junior Ministers assist the ministers in charge of the department. They normally have responsibility for a particular area within the department and are sometimes given a title that reflects this - for example Minister of Transport.
