asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many houses were built n the Scottish new towns in the 12 months ended 30th April, 1964; how many houses were under construction at that date; and how these figures compare with those for 12 months previously.

In the year ended 30th April, 1964, 2,202 houses were built in the Scottish new towns compared with 1,449 in the previous year. Four thousand five hundred and forty-three houses were then under construction compared with 3,261 a year earlier.

How does this good progress compare with that being made in England?

I am sorry to disappoint the hon. Member for Edinburgh, East (Mr. Willis). In the last financial year, both Cumbernauld and East Kilbride completed more new houses than any other new town in Britain did.

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that Glenrothes, which is in a development district, completed fewer houses in 1964 than in 1963? Can he explain that?

Without notice, I could not explain it.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
