Does my right hon. Friend consider that this increase will be sufficient to meet the demand for good quality calves in Scotland, particularly in view of the present rather uncertain situation of beef supplies overall?

It is very difficult to forecast this with certainty, but I do not think one could regard an increase of 70 per cent. in 10 years as unsatisfactory, because the raising of beef calves is a comparatively slow process.

If the hon. Gentleman will put down a Question on that I will answer it.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
