asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will now make a statement on the case of Henry Scudder, who was sentenced to nine years' imprisonment at the Central Criminal Court on 12th May, 1960, in respect to which a petition has been sent to him by a firm of solicitors as well as a letter dated 1st May, 1964, by the honourable Member for Erith and Crayford suggesting inquiry into the possibility of a miscarriage of justice.

Inquiries are in progress, and I am not yet in a position to make a statement.

Will the hon. Lady try to get something done in this case? Is not she aware that there is substantial evidence that the man has not had a square deal at all? Does she know that he has been granted legal aid to take proceedings for negligence or breach of contract against the solicitors who should have represented him, and that he has been in prison for four years?

Again, I assure the hon. Gentleman that we realise the urgency of this matter.
