Oral Answers to Questions — Scotland – in the House of Commons at 12:00 am on 29 April 1964.
asked the Secretary of State for Scotland to what extent the agreement of the National Farmers' Union to this year's agricultural Price Review was dependent upon commitments entered into by himself in regard to future reviews.
The terms of the settlement are set out in the Annual Review White Paper. No other commitments were entered into.
Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that, contrary to what appears in that Review, the farmers were not quite satisfied with the Review and that they are under the impression that the right hon. Gentleman has committed himself to something like a three-year or five-year plan? Would he tell the House what commitment he has made? He may not be Secretary of State next year, and it is better that the next Secretary of State should know.
I can assure the right hon. Gentleman that no assurances were given about the determination of future Reviews. They could not be given under our system.
