asked the President of the Board of Trade what action he is taking to introduce new industries into the Stranraer area of Wigtownshire.
The Board of Trade is continuing to encourage the establishment of new industries in Stranraer. The facilities of the Local Employment Act are available to any firms prepared to provide employment there.
Is my hon. Friend aware of the probable closure of the Ministry of Aviation Scientific Establishment at West Freugh? Would he not think that this is a good chance to get some scientific or technical industry there which could employ the men who will be out of work in the district? Will he look at this matter with a great deal of urgency? Is my hon. Friend further aware that there is not much point in rendering areas like mine completely depopulated in order to cause congestion in Birmingham and the south of England?
I have inquired about the closing of the establishment at West Freugh but I am told that no decision has yet been taken. If it is closed I quite agree that the existence of skilled men there will provide a good opportunity for industry to come there.
