Oral Answers to Questions — Trade and Commerce – in the House of Commons at 12:00 am on 28 November 1961.
asked the President of the Board of Trade what are his plans for the provision of new industries in the new town of Peterlee and the adjoining district.
My right hon. Friend will continue to do all he can to encourage further industrial development in the Peterlee area, where the facilities of the Local Employment Act are available for new industries and expansion. There are some 200 new jobs in prospect from expansions in the Horden and Haswell Employment Exchange areas.
Is the hon. Gentleman aware that for the past five years I have had the same Answer every time I have asked similar Questions? Is this due to failure on my part or heresy on the part of the Government? Is the hon. Gentleman aware that yesterday the Minister told me that at Wingate, a few miles from Peterlee, in the adjoining district a pit which employs a large number of men will be closed down in a few months? What is to be done about that?
We shall go on attempting to attract industry to these places and showing industrialists suitable places for suitable projects.
