asked the Prime Minister if he will make arrangements for Members of Parliament, who use their own vehicles for purposes for which they are at present entitled to use travel vouchers, to be reimbursed the cost incurred to an extent not exceeding the public transport bulk travel cost.

In view of the obvious equity and common-sense nature of this proposal and the fact that Government Departments have been operating car allowance schemes for a long time, can we take it that these deliberations will not be prolonged? Will the Prime Minister tell us when we shall have a definite decision?

No, Sir, I am afraid I could not give an undertaking as to a definite date. I can assure the hon. Gentleman that we are considering this in the hope of finding a workable scheme.
