Oral Answers to Questions — Scotland – in the House of Commons at 12:00 am on 28 July 1959.
Mr James McInnes
, Glasgow Central
12:00,
28 July 1959
asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what representations he has received from Glasgow Corporation regarding its desire to develop a site at Dumbreck Avenue, Glasgow, for housing purposes; and what reply he has sent.
Hon. John Maclay
, Renfrewshire West
The Corporation represented to me that this site, which is held for development as a Territorial Army centre, should be made available instead to the Corporation for housing development. After consultation with my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for War, I wrote to the Corporation explaining why this could not be done, and I am sending the hon. Member a copy of my letter.

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the feeling in Glasgow about the fact that he is prepared to give a drill hall priority over housing in a city which has no further sites available on which to build and which has a waiting list of 120,000? In those circumstances, is it not wicked and shameful to make a decision of this kind?
Hon. John Maclay
, Renfrewshire West
The hon. Gentleman will know that this matter has a long history. I think that at an earlier stage planning permission for the use of this site for this purpose was given by the Corporation.
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
