Oral Answers to Questions — Education – in the House of Commons at 12:00 am on 2nd July 1959.
asked the Minister of Education what advice he has given to local education authorities about the granting of part-time day release to their employees.
None, Sir. The record of local government in this sphere compares favourably with that of other occupations.
Does the hon. Gentleman realise that there are local education authorities which do not give part-time release to laboratory technicians who wish to take technical qualifications, and does he not think this very undesirable?
I will certainly look into that. In local government as a whole, 52 per cent. of boys and 48 per cent. of girls under 18 were given day release in 1957–58, which is not too bad a percentage.
