asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation the reason for the large traffic block in the Marks Tey area on the London to Colchester Road during Whitsun weekend.

Congestion between Marks Tey and the start of the Colchester by-pass is caused at holiday time by the heavy volume of traffic from London on the A.12 joining coast-bound traffic from the West on A.120.

Is my hon. Friend aware of the urgent need to extend the dual carriageway from Marks Tey to the Colchester by-pass? Can he say when the work is contemplated, and whether it is included in the £3 million scheme prepared by the Ministry, to be undertaken in the next two years?

The solution of this problem is, I think, the building of the Stanway by-pass. That is in our programme, but we have not yet given it a date.
