asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what action he has taken under the Clean Air Act, 1956, and earlier legislation to reduce atmospheric pollution from industrial undertakings situated on Tees-side and, particularly, in South Bank and Grangetown.

The alkali inspectors are working on the difficult technical problems presented by industrial processes brought under the Alkali Act last year. The local authorities are responsible for enforcing the Clean Air Act in respect of non-scheduled processes.

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that my constituents had great hopes of the clean air legislation passed earlier in this Parliament, but they are now beginning to wonder when something is to happen about it?

I am quite sure the hopes of the hon. Member's constituents will be fulfilled. The Alkali Inspectorate is following this matter carefully.
